Fun with ubuntu logo

Well, it seems like people like to mess around with Ubuntu logo. Some of them are creative, hilarious, and offensive in the eyes of Ubuntu users. PLEASE PARDON THE PUN. DON’T HIT ME! Especially Ubuntu-my meetup is just around the corner. Please don’t ask me for the author of those images. These are just some of the images that I came across on the net.

Pictures you will never find in news after 50 years of independence

These were taken from a particular mail. They caught my attention.

The demolition of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Kampung Karuppiah in Padang Jawa, Shah Alam

Demolished

Stand-off

4 Human rights lawyers arrested handcuffed and locked up for defending Hindu temple demolition

Mr.P.Uthayakumar, Mr.P.Waythamoorthy, Mr.Manoharan And Mr.Ganabatirau

Police Report lodged against Constable Hasrul

It is sad to see all these cases taken place in Malaysia. If you’d like to know more about demolition of Hindu temples in Malaysia, feel free to visit these sites. The more I read the more absurdity I sense.

TM : rfc ignorance

It’s annoying to see smtp connection from TM email server. At the end of transmission, their email server will not send “QUIT” after “END-OF-MESSAGE” stage. Leaving tonnes of open connection hanging around until they finally timed out.

Aug 8 12:41:45 mail postfix/smtpd[42261]: timeout after END-OF-MESSAGE from
  \ pluto.tm.com.my[210.187.89.62]

From RFC 2821 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

4.1.1.10 QUIT (QUIT)

This command specifies that the receiver MUST send an OK reply, and then close the transmission channel.

The receiver MUST NOT intentionally close the transmission channel until it receives and replies to a QUIT command (even if there was an error). The sender MUST NOT intentionally close the transmission channel until it sends a QUIT command and SHOULD wait until it receives the reply (even if there was an error response to a previous command). If the connection is closed prematurely due to violations of the above or system or network failure, the server MUST cancel any pending transaction, but not undo any previously completed transaction, and generally MUST act as if the command or transaction in progress had received a temporary error (i.e., a 4yz response).
Will ya read up rfc 2821?

A Reader’s Toolbox
There is an increased incidence of having a voip client today. Due to internet phones everywhere, now everyone has a voip software incorporated into his system. That definitely implies even more voip deals. The most common internet telephone service being employed is of course vonage. On the 2nd number, a lot of skype download is happening too.

Spammers are dull (& Rich): 30 years for notorious Spammer

Probably one lesser Cialis, Viagra and Levitra spam mail you will be getting daily.

“Internationally known e-mail spammer Christopher William Smith aka “Rizler” on Wednesday to 30 years in prison for running an illegal Internet pharmacy that sold about $24 million in prescription drugs.”

U.S. District Judge Michael Davis called Smith, 27, a “drug kingpin” as he meted out the sentence requested by federal prosecutors. Though Davis expressed some misgivings about the length of the prison term recommended by sentencing guidelines, he said it was nonetheless reasonable.

Smith’s appearance Wednesday followed three other sentencings related to Smith’s online drugstore, which he called Xpress Pharmacy.

Darrell Arden Griepp, 46, of Burnsville got three years of probation and 80 hours of community service after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of distributing controlled substances. He played a minor role as a telephone marketer and deserved leniency, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole Engisch.

Smith said he didn’t intend to become “the drug lord of Internet pharmacy,” but admitted that most of his businesses “have been on the edge of what the government liked and didn’t like.”

The pharmacy was very lucrative: the government seized 17 of Smith’s automobiles and sold them at auction in 2006 for more than $1.6 million.

Joe Friedberg, Smith’s attorney, told Davis on Wednesday that no other Internet pharmacy conviction has resulted in sentences exceeding 20 years.

Engisch said the government had been willing to cut Smith a deal early on. But Smith changed that forever when he threatened Hollis, she said.

“Mr. Smith is nothing but a drug dealer,” she said. “He’s a high-tech drug dealer.”

LPI certification rant

I hate to say this. But I really disappointed by the way LPI handles their operations especially email inquiries to info@lpi.org. About 6-7 week after receiving notification of completion of LPIC 1, I didn’t get my certification from LPI. I tried to contact LPI via email.

All I get from info@lpi.org is auto email response stating, “Hello, and thank you for writting to the Linux Professional Institute. This email is being sent to you because you sent a message to info@lpi.org. yada yada yada blah blah blah………..”.

After a couple of weeks with a few follow-up emails, and still no response from the LPI. I admit that I hate CC feature in email, but it works effectively on most of cases and especially in Malaysia.

So I checked up the staff list at this page and picked up the emails of Director of Communications, Director of Operations and Executive Assistant. Added them to CC and forward my queries. Guess what, I’ve got a response from Scott within 5 minutes (Thank you Mr. Scott Lamberton).

All I can say is a professional body should behave the way its members are expected to behave professionally.

Postfix : reject_unverified_sender

I’ve been experimenting with numerous postfix features since Kaeru introduced me to this beast last year. One of them is Address verification. It is a feature that allows the Postfix SMTP server to block a sender (MAIL FROM) or recipient (RCPT TO) address until the address has been verified to be deliverable. The idea is to reject junk mail with an unreplyable sender address.

However, this feature is available in Postfix version 2.1 and later. The implementation is simple and clearcut.

CONFIGURATION

The following configuration is an example for Sender address verification for mail from frequently forged domains where selective domains were picked for address verification.

/usr/local/etc/postfix/main.cf

smtpd_sender_restrictions = permit_mynetworks,
    check_sender_access hash:/usr/local/etc/postfix/sender_access

/usr/local/etc/postfix/send_access:-

hotmail.com reject_unverified_sender

Note : remember to hash the sender_access file with postmap and reload your postfix.
